The present invention relates to a method for driving a memory controller to control a nonvolatile memory device. The method for driving the memory controller according to the present invention includes the steps of: receiving read data from the nonvolatile memory device; counting the number of error bits of the read data; calculating a running average (RA) using the number of the error bits; and performing a wear leveling operation for the nonvolatile memory device using the running average value as a wear leveling index.
