PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition that inhibits tumor cells expressing transmembrane mucin (MUC1).SOLUTION: The invention provides a composition comprising at least 6 but not more than 20 consecutive MUC1 residues and a sequence CQCRRK, the amino terminal cysteine of CQCRRK is covered on its NH2 terminus by at least one amino acid residue which need not correspond to the native MUC-1 transmembrane sequence. The composition inhibits in vivo oligomerization of MUC1, whereby induces in vivo tumor cell apoptosis and tumor tissue necrosis.
