PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image acquisition and display system for optimizing or determining image characteristics of an entire image to be displayed.SOLUTION: A method and an apparatus for preparing and displaying images use image characteristics of a region of interest of images to optimize or determine image characteristics of the entire image to be displayed. Region-of-interest information is used for calculating a system synchronized brightness control (SSBC) profile for the region of interest. The SSBC profile may be used to adjust an image signal, thereby supplying such an image that the image characteristics of the region of interest are optimized. The image characteristics and/or the SSBC profile information is supplied as metadata included in a video signal data stream. The region of interest may be selected in a portion where the image is obtained or where the image is displayed or any other portion (e.g., an image storage device or an image player).
