The invention provides a process for producing water-redispersible polymer powder compositions having cationic functionality, wherein one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers are free-radically polymerized in the presence of protective colloid and/or emulsifier in aqueous medium, and the resultant aqueous polymer dispersion is dried after addition of a cationic protective colloid as drying aid, characterized in that homo- or copolymers of one or more cationic monomers having a quaternary ammonium halide group are used as cationic protective colloid, where 50% by weight to 100% by weight of the halide ions in the quaternary ammonium halide groups have been exchanged for non-halide anions, and the proportion of halide ions is less than 1% by weight, based on the total weight of the polymer powder composition. |
