<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication device with a light-emitting part, located on a reading surface thereof, whose emission state is surely visible even when a wireless communication medium is held over the reading surface. <P>SOLUTION: When a settlement device 10 holds an IC card C to be communicated with over a reading surface 12 thereof, the length of the longest of line segments that connects two points on the outer edge of a projection area S of the IC card C projected on the reading surface 12 is defined as a longest projection length L.
