An exhaust purification system for an internal combustion engine is provided that can drastically reduce the amount of fuel required in filter regeneration. The exhaust purification system includes an exhaust purification device provided with a DPF that collects PM, and an ECU that estimates a PM accumulation amount that is an amount of PM deposited in the DPF, as well as executing filter regeneration control that raises the DPF in temperature and combustively removes the PM deposited in the DPF. The DPF has a PM oxidation catalyst configured by loading at least Ag onto a composite oxide having oxygen release capacity. The ECU initiates DPF regeneration control in response to the PM accumulation amount having exceeded a predetermined PM accumulation limit amount, and ends the DPF regeneration control thus initiated such that PM of a predetermined PM residual amount remains after the DPF regeneration control ends, without being combustively removed. |
