<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for appropriately increasing speed of an image reading processing using a light source with a small light volume change with a temperature change such as an LED light source and using a photoelectric conversion element in accordance with the light volume of the light source and for reducing a processing load for the increase of the speed as much as possible and to provide an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: Either on power supply time or sleep mode release time in an image reader (Yes side in S1), a photoelectric conversion element reads white reference data from a white reference member (S3). The first period is set in accordance with an output level of the photoelectric conversion element when the white reference data is read (S4). The first period which is set is stored in period storage means (S5).
