884,747. Cables. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd., and PIRELLI - GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. Feb. 17, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6936/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 36. A submarine cable having insulation extruded over a metal tape conductor surrounding a torsionally balanced stranded metal heart is made by applying a copper or other high conductivity metal tape longitudinally around the heart, continuously butt-welding the abutting edges by inert gas-shielded electric arc-welding and reducing the welded tape down on to the heart to grip it. A metal foil may be included between the tape and the heart to protect it against the welding heat and the heart may be compacted by swaging. The outer conductor may be copper or aluminium and may be of six tapes helically applied with a long lay or a single tape folded longitudinally. Polythene or polypropylene may be used for the sheath and a barium chromate impregnated fabric tape may first be applied over the outer conductor. Specifications 703,782, 722,707 and 740,647 are referred to. |
