933,114. Projectiles; sealing rings. HOTCHKISS-BRANDT. June 23, 1961 [June 29, 1960; May 16, 1961], No. 22792/61. Class 9 (1). A projectile has a sealing ring of thermoplastic material disposed in a circumferential groove whose bottom surface 6 makes a halfangle x, Fig. 2, of less than 25 degrees, and preferably about 10 degrees, the diameter of said bottom increasing in the forward direction, and the sealing ring is movable along the groove from a rear inoperative position to a forward operative position. The sealing ring, which may be of nylon, has rupture initiating niches such that after the projectile leaves the gun muzzle they break into segments and are stripped from the projectile. On firing, the propellant gas pressure forces the sealing ring from the position shown to a corresponding position at the other end of the groove 6.
|
