<p>A tread for an escalator step having a frame which is adapted to be connected to an escalator drive mechanism. The tread comprises a plurality of base sections I adapted to be removably secured to the frame and lying in contiguous parallel relationship across the width of the step. Each base section 1 carrying a plurality of tread sections 2, the tread sections being removably secured to the base portion by fastening means passing through the tread section (6 fig 1) from the surface thereof to engage in the base section. The tread may have a plurality of upstanding cleats 8 arranged in a spaced parallel relationship extending in the direction of movement of the tread when secured to the escalator; the treads may be formed of aluminum or aluminum alloy and be arranged across the step in 5 base sections with three tread sections on each base section. Each tread section may have at least one locating projection engageable in a corresponding recess in the base portion and the base section has two or more locating projections (10 fig 3) engageable in corresponding recesses in the frame of the step.</p> |
