<p>Ethylenically unsaturated compounds (including aromatic 1-olefins and dienes, but particularly aliphatic 1-olefins such as ethylene or propylene are polymerized in contact with a catalyst comprising a transition metal halide and the reaction product, substituted in its benzene ring with an alkali metal, obtained from the alkylation of benzene with low molecular weight olefin polymer, the reaction product having an average molecular weight between 150 and 400. The preferred reaction product is that of dodecene (propylene tetramer) with benzene, which is fractionated to give "dodecylbenzene intermediate" (B.R. 350 DEG -450 DEG F., MW 160), "dodecylbenzene" (B.R. 530 DEG -600 DEG F., MW 237), "postdodecylbenzene overhead" (B.R. 600 DEG -685 DEG F., MW 300) and "stripped post-dodecylbenzene" (B.R. 630 DEG -770 DEG F., MW 385) the boiling ranges and molecular weight being approximate figures. In Example 1, chlorination in absence of light and in presence of iron filings of "dodecylbenzene intermediate" gave, after distillation, a fraction of B.R. 143 DEG -170 DEG C., probably containing chloro-tert-butylbenzene, chloro-tert-amylbenzene and chloro-tert-hexylbenzene; this fraction was reacted with a dispersion of sodium in "Ponca City Heavy Alkylate", the reaction being initiated with n-amyl alcohol. The organosodium compound is used in conjunction with TiCl4 to polymerize ethylene, using n-hexane diluent.ALSO:A polymerisation catalyst component is the reaction product, substituted in its benzene ring with an alkali metal, obtained from the alkylation of benzene with low molecular weight olefin polymer, the reaction product having an average molecular weight between 150 and 400.
