Aluminium compounds of formula AlHx R3-x, when R represents a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon or an alkaryl radical and x is 1 or 2, are made by reacting at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure preformed aluminium trialkyl, "aluminium flitters" (as defined) and hydrogen. "Aluminium flitters" are platelets having a surface area (Rigden) exceeding 600 cm2/gm and of which at least 50% and preferably at least 75% do not pass a 100 mesh sieve. It is preferred that the surface area be at least 1,000 cm-/gm. (or 2,000 or even 3,000 cm2/gm). They may be prepared by grinding in a ball-mill or hammer-mill. In a preferred process, the alkyl aluminium hydride formed may be reacted with an olefine to given an aluminium trialkyl. A trace of iodine may be used as activator. The preferred ratio of olefin to hydrogen is between 1,4 : 1 and 1,9 : 1. Specified olefins include ethylene, propylene, butylene, pentylene, hexylene, heptylene, octylene, nonylene, and their branched chain forms such as isobutylene, and substituted olefins such as styrene. The olefin used preferably corresponds to the alkyl radicals in the aluminium trialkyl. |
