<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for culturing a chondrocyte while maintaining the chondrocyte character, and to provide a method for culturing the chondrocyte. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided the substrate for culturing the chondrocyte presenting a sugar chain (with the proviso that glucose is excluded) to the surface, more particularly, the substrate for culturing the chondrocyte presenting galactose or N-acetylglucosamine to the surface, or the substrate for culturing the chondrocyte in which a hydrophobic top surface is coated with a glycoprotein, more particularly, the substrate for culturing the chondrocyte in which the hydrophobic top surface is coated with a glycoprotein having the galactose or N-acetylglucosamine as the terminal. Further, there is provided the method for culturing the chondrocyte including using the substrate.
