Sockets 100, e.g. hexagon, dodecagonal, and splined sockets, that have inner surface geometries adapted to engage a flank of a fastener at a point away from a corner of the fastener at a distance of about 15 to 30 percent of a length of the flank away from the corner of the fastener. The inner geometries may include a first and second recess 104, designed to receive the corners of the fastener head 122, with a sidewall 106 extending between. The sidewall may have a first portion (108 figure 1A) flanked by two angularly displaced second portions (110), where an intersection between the first portion and a second portion defines the contact point (112). The angular displacement of the second portions relative to the first may be between 5 and 7 degrees. Alternatively the side wall may have a first portion extending from a first recess and a second portion extending from a second recess, the intersection of the first and second portions defining the contact point. The first and second portions may be: angularly displaced relative to one another by 40 to 45 degrees; of substantially equal length; substantially straight; and the intersection point may be a rounded corner.
|
