A method for determining a metabolic state of a patient, comprising: detecting one or more hyperpolarized metabolic products of a hyperpolarized composition by magnetic resonance, the one or more hyperpolarized metabolic products formed by metabolism of the hyperpolarized composition in the patient or a tissue sample thereof, the hyperpolarized composition comprising at least one of a hyperpolarized dialkyl 13C succinate compound or a hyperpolarized dialkyl 13C fumarate compound; and determining the metabolic state of the patient according to the one or more hyperpolarized metabolic products detected by the magnetic resonance.
