at least one portion comprising: a composite material comprising a metallic matrix, and a plurality of discrete particles in the matrix, the particles and the matrix having different chemical compositions, wherein the at least one portion has a surface and the particles protrude from the surface of the at least one portion, the particles have an average maximum dimension of at least about one micron, and the matrix defines a depression around at least one of the particles protruding from the surface of the at least one portion.
