A coating composition comprising: inorganic nanoparticles comprising colloidal silica, colloidal zirconia, colloidal alumina, colloidal ceria, colloidal tin oxide, or colloidal titanium dioxide, the inorganic nanoparticles having functional groups attached to the surface through covalent bonds, wherein the functional groups comprise: amine groups, protected amine groups, or combinations thereof;amine-reactive groups; andoptional hydrophilic groups; an optional surfactant; and a liquid medium comprising water and no greater than 30 wt-% organic solvent, if present, based on the total weight of liquid medium; wherein a molar ratio of the amount of amine groups, protected amine groups, or combinations thereof to the amount of amine-reactive groups is within the range of 95:5 to 5:95; and wherein the coating composition provides a hydrophilic coating to a substrate on which it is coated and dried, having an improvement, relative to an uncoated substrate, in at least one characteristic selected from the group consisting of antifogging, antireflective, easy-cleaning, and antistatic characteristics.
