<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element having polarization characteristic in a narrow wavelength band.SOLUTION: A polarizing element comprises a first medium, a second medium, and a laminate structure comprising a first dielectric grating, metallic grating, and second dielectric grating laminated in the described order between the first medium and second medium, where the laminate structure has a predetermined grating period. The polarizing element reflects polarized light vibrating in a direction perpendicular to a direction of the grating period and transmits other light in a specific wavelength band. A wavelengthλcorresponding to a maximum reflectance of polarized light, the predetermined grating period P, a refractive index na of the first medium, a refractive index nb of the second medium, an effective refractive index ne of a region of the first dielectric grating or second dielectric grating in a direction perpendicular to the grating period direction, a refractive index nH1 of the first dielectric grating, a refractive index nH2 of the second dielectric grating, and an incident angleθof light satisfy predetermined conditional expressions.</p> |
