960,121. Mechanically treading grapes. F. J. CLARKE, and J. H. SMITHES. Jan. 11, 1962 [Jan. 12, 1961], No. 1414/61. Heading A4C. In mechanically treading grapes and aerating and stirring the expressed juice, the grapes are placed in a vat 1, Figs. 1 and 3, and squeezed by a platen 16, e.g. provided with perforations 61, secured, together with stirring paddles 55 and 56, to a vertical shaft 15, which is oscillated, vertically and rotatably, by mechanism mounted on the base 4 of a carriage 3, which can be traversed, continuously or intermittently, e.g. in two directions at right angles to each other, across the open mouth of the vat. Two parallel tubular axles 5 may pass through the base 4, so that the carriage 3 may be slid to and fro, by hand, along them. These axles may carry doubleflanged wheels 6 engaging rails 2 along the top of the vat. The carriage may be moved, to and fro, along the rails by a chain-andsprocket drive 57, actuated by a handle 58. Two platens (not shown) reciprocating vertically 180 degrees out of phase may be provided. In an alternative construction, the wheels may be mounted on the carriage to engage a circular track around the mouth of the vat.
|
