An active front wheel steering apparatus for a vehicle and a control method thereof are provided to satisfy vehicle movements according to the steering will of a driver by forcibly compensating for a steering angle as much as an offset angle when an offset occurs between a steering angle and a pinion angle during driving. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the active front wheel steering apparatus comprises: a column unit that wraps around a steering shaft connected to a steering wheel of a vehicle; and a pinion unit that converts the rotating motion of the steering shaft into a straight line motion of a rack bar; a first sensing unit that senses the speed of the vehicle; a second sensing unit that detects a steering angle of the column unit by the rotation of the steering shaft; and an electronic control unit that, in a condition where the speed of the vehicle sensed by the first sensing unit exceeds the standard vehicle speed, when an offset occurs between the steering angle of the column unit sensed by the second sensing unit and the steering angle of the pinion unit, reflects a delta angle for compensation determined on the basis of the difference between the steering angle of the column unit and the steering angle of the pinion unit in the target steering angle according to the steering will of the driver, creates a position control signal, and provides the position control signal created to a motor that drives a gear ratio converting device mounted on the column unit. |
