PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To disclose a system and a method for monitoring a dual-polarization signal.SOLUTION: The system and the method include a step for adding a first supervisory signal to a first polarization component of the dual-polarization signal to get a first combined signal and an optical region and a step for adding a second supervisory signal to a second polarization component of the dual-polarization signal to get a second combined signal either in an electrical or optical domain. The supervisory signal is arbitrary and non-complimentary and is modulated at a frequency substantially lower than a modulation frequency of the dual-polarization signal. The system and the method further include a step for analyzing a supervisory signal upon receipt.
