PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image capturing device which uses both the phase difference detection method and contrast method to reduce focus adjustment time.SOLUTION: An image capturing device includes; an image sensor which has a plurality of focus detection pixels and photoelectrically converts an object image; focus detection means which performs phase difference-based focus detection using signals from the plurality of focus detection pixels; contrast evaluation value generation means which generates a contrast evaluation value using signals from the image sensor; focus control means which controls a focusing lens on the basis of output signals from the focus detection means and contrast evaluation value generation means; and a speed setting means for setting moving speed of the focusing lens, where the speed setting means sets the speed of the focusing lens on the basis of a defocus amount computed by the focus detection means or an aperture value, and a first time period required for switching a frame rate of the image sensor.
