The method involves cooling a gas stream (1) flowing from a compressor (2) under pressure in a heat exchanger (5), and liquefying the cooled gas stream by a refrigerant cycle to form liquid flow rich in carbon dioxide, where the refrigeration cycle circulates a refrigerant rich in carbon dioxide. A part of the liquid flow is heated in the heat exchanger, and recycled molecules (27) of the refrigerant are sent in gas form to be cooled in the exchanger to form the liquid flow and/or sent to a treatment unit to form the liquid flow during partial or total failure of the compressor. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for liquefying gas stream rich in carbon dioxide.
