Provided is a washing machine which can detect overload of a motor, and when overload is detected, increase water level and proceed washing, and a control method thereof. The washing machine detects overload of the motor by using a load detection circuit, and if the overload of the motor is detected, the washing machine changes water level and proceeds washing to prevent limitation of the motor for not not generating motor burning smell, and continuously operates the motor without stops to prevent degradation of washing performance.
