A method for forming a filter rod may include providing a bale of crimped tow band having about 10 denier per filament or greater and about 20,000 total denier or less, the crimped tow band comprising a plurality of cellulose acetate filaments; and placing the crimped tow band in an apparatus so as to form a filter rod.

a tow comprising a plurality of cellulose acetate filaments; and an additive, the filter having an encapsulated pressure drop of about 3.5 to about 20 mm water/mm length of filter, wherein without the additive the filter has an encapsulated pressure drop of about 3 mm water/mm length of filter or less, and the filter having a circumference of about 26 mm or less.
