A cell observation apparatus (1) is for observing a cell retained by a microplate (20) in which a plurality of wells (21) for retaining samples (S) are arranged, and is provided with a microplate holder (11) for mounting the microplate (20), and an electrical stimulation unit (16) in which a plurality of electrode pairs (17) are arranged which include negative electrodes (17a) and positive electrodes (17b). The negative electrodes (17a) and positive electrodes (17b) are covered by insulators (71a, 71b) except for distal-end parts thereof facing the wells (21), electrode parts (72a, 72b) exposed to the outside are formed by the distal-end parts, and an air space (73) opening upward from the electrode parts (72a, 72b) is formed between the negative electrodes (17a) and the positive electrodes (17b). |
