<p>This invention addresses the problem of measuring a stream of modulated optical pulses. The invention finds particular application in quantum communication systems. A signal with J different modulation levels is divided into J different frames. In this quantum system, it is not possible to know a priori which modulation level will be detected at any instant in time. However for each frame, a respective probability of detection is assigned to each of the J different modulation levels. Each of the frames has a different class probability distribution (see equations 12-14). The average intensity is monitored in each of the J frames, and J simultaneous equations are solved to determine the intensity of each of the J modulation levels. Figure 5 relates to the invention claimed.</p> |
