A Geiger Muller tube comprises an enclosed container having at least one metal wall (for example stainless steel) forming a cathode, the metal wall comprising a layer of platinum, a metal anode spaced from said cathode, and means to apply a voltage between said anode and said cathode. The container is filled with a gas mixture comprising a noble gas and chlorine or bromine to a pressure of less than 0.2 atmospheres. The platinum surface layer of platinum tetrachloride or platinum tetrabromide has a thickness of at least 10 nm. This is manufactured by introducing a chlorine or bromine containing gas at 200-300 degrees Celsius until the surface and gas reaction has attained a steady state. |
