<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soil modifying agent and soil modification method for vegetation land or agricultural land, which are high in pH reducing effect of soil with less harmful effects on plants, safe for human body, and free from irritating odor, and maintain the pH reducing effect even after raining, and to provide a disinfecting agent and disinfection method suitable for agricultural and gardening plants, which are less harmful on plants, safe for human body, free from irritating order, effective for prevention of plant disease damage caused by bacteria (bacterial disease), and less likely to cause tolerization of disease damaging microorganisms. <P>SOLUTION: The soil modifying or disinfecting agent contains fumaric acid that is a highly safe compound widely used as a food additive or a salt thereof.
