Disclosed are a mobile terminal and a method for controlling the same. The mobile terminal according to the embodiments of the present invention comprises: a terminal body having a front side and a rear side; a display unit disposed on the front side to display visual information corresponding to multiple layers; a front input unit formed on the front side to receive an inputted control command and a rear input unit formed on the rear side to receive an inputted control command; and a control unit, wherein the control unit applies a function corresponding to an input to a first visual information shown on a first layer of the display unit in response to the input applied to the front input unit, and activates a second layer disposed under the first layer while maintaining the state of the first layer of the first visual information in response to the input applied to the rear input unit.
