Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for machine translation, wherein the apparatus acquires translation knowledge from an external server and efficiently updates DB embedded in a terminal to optimize the translation knowledge limited to DB embedded in a portable mobile communication terminal such as a smartphone and provide translation knowledge suitable for an individual user. The apparatus for machine translation according to the present invention comprises: an input unit receiving information to be translated inputted by a user; a translation unit translating the inputted information based on translation data contained in an embedded translation DB and extracting translation information generated during the process of translation; and a communication unit transmitting the translation information to a first server and receiving new translation data which are not contained in the translation DB but necessary while the translation unit translates the inputted information from the first server.
