The supply of water to a horticultural sprinkler is controlled by a main valve 38, Fig. 1, with a port 40 therethrough whereby the chamber behind the valve is open to the water inlet 35; the chamber is connected to outlet 36 and flow thereto is regulated by an auxiliary valve 45 actuated by a float 23 either hollow or made from a light-weight material e.g. polystyrene, through a permanent magnet 30 separated from the valve 45 by a diaphragm 33. The float 23 is housed in a double-walled vessel 10, the annular space 14 between the walls incorporating ports 15 leading into the bottom of the float chamber, and wicks 18. An adjustable spray nozzle directed on to the float-chamber lid 21 is connected to the outlet 36. With the float chamber empty the magnet 30 contacts the diaphragm 33 and magnetically unseats the auxiliary valve 45 so that the main valve 38 is opened by the supply pressure whereby water is led to the sprinkler and spray nozzle; water from the latter runs from the lid via the space 14 into the float chamber. The float 23 is lifted and the auxiliary valve 45 closes causing the main valve 38 to seat. Water in the float chamber evaporates from the space 14 directly and through the wicks 18 until the water level in the float chamber has reduced sufficiently to enable the magnet 30 to again open the auxiliary valve. A bimetallic strip 70 holds the float in the raised position so preventing operation of the sprinkler when the ambient temperature is above a given level.</p>
