Lubricating oil additives are prepared by reacting the hydrolysate of a phosphorus sulphidehydrocarbon reaction product with a basic alkaline earth metal compound in the presence of an aldehyde or ketone, at above 150 DEG F.; water may be present (see Groups IV(a) and IV(b) ). The products, after removal of unreacted aldehyde or ketone and excess water are oil soluble. The neutralization reaction may be carried out in a liquid hydrocarbon, which may be the same as or similar to the hydrocarbon oil in which the additive is to be used. The additives may be used in mineral lubricating oils, natural and synthetic hydrocarbon oils and synthetic oils of the alkylene oxide type and the polycarboxylic acid ester type. Zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates may also be present.ALSO:Alkaline earth metal salts are prepared by reacting the hydrolysate of a phosphorus sulphide-hydrocarbon polymer reaction product with a basic alkaline earth metal compound in the presence of an aldehyde or ketone at above 150 DEG F. Water may be present. The phosphorus sulphide may be P2S3, P2S5, P4S3 or P3S7. Specified polymers are those of propylene, butylenes and amylenes, and copolymers of isomonoolefines and monoolefines of less than 6 carbon atoms. Suitable alkaline earth compounds are the oxides, hydroxides, sulphides and carbonates. Specified aldehydes and ketones are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, propionaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, butyraldehyde, tiglaldehyde, enanthaldehyde, valeraldehyde, benzaldehyde, caprylaldehyde, acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, methyl vinyl ketone, mesityl oxide, diethyl ketone, diisopropyl ketone, cyclohexanone and cyclopentanone and their mixtures.ALSO:Alkaline earth metal salts are prepared by reacting the hydrolysate of a phosphorus sulphide-hydrocarbon reaction product with a basic alkaline earth metal compound in the presence of an aldehyde or ketone at above 150 DEG F. Suitable alkaline earth compounds are the hydroxides, carbonates, oxides and sulphides. Specified aldehydes and ketones are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, propionaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, butyraldehyde, tiglaldehyde, enanthaldehyde, valeraldehyde, benzaldehyde, caprylaldehyde, acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, methyl vinyl ketone, mesityl oxide, diethyl ketone, diisopropyl ketone, cyclohexanone and cyclopentanone and their mixtures. |
