<p>A method and apparatus for providing a particular service to a local-area network (LAN), for example in a public safety incident scene, are disclosed. A device determines the set of services deployed on it 501; determines the number T of devices within the LAN running and offering the particular service 503; determines a number C of devices within the LAN capable of offering the particular service but currently are not 505; and determining whether to start 515, cease 519 or continue to offer 521 the particular service based on T and C. The service may only be started on the device if the number of services running on it 511 is less than the total number of services that could run simultaneously 509. Whether the service is started may also depend on a desired degree of replication R for the particular service 507. The values of T and C may be determined via over-the-air messages transmitted from the devices.</p> |
