Spark gap apparatus comprises two opposed axially aligned electrodes 1, 2 and at least six needle-shaped members 3 of electrically-conducting material arranged so that their points are directed towards the spark gap between the electrodes and lie at equal intervals on the circumference of a circle around the axis of the electrodes in a plane at right-angles thereto, the points being in close proximity to the spark gap but sufficiently spaced therefrom so as to be free of the spark, the needle-shaped members being at substantially the same voltage as or a higher voltage than that applied to the electrode operating at the higher voltage. The diameter of the circle may be adjusted by releasing retaining screws 8 which thread through a metallic ring 9 serving as an electrical correction to the needles, the plane of the circle relative to the electrode 2 may be adjusted by rotation of insulating disc 12 and the gap width may be adjusted by rotation of insulating disc 13. The electrodes 1, 2 are preferably of aluminium and a current of air from tube 20 preferably directed across the spark gap to sweep away electrically-charged particles. It is stated that the statistical time lag may be reduced to an error of less than 10 millimicro seconds, and the spark gap used to trigger discharges in spectrochemical analysis apparatus.
