4-methylpentene-1 is obtained by the dimerisation of propylene at below 140 DEG C. in the presence of a lamellar complex of sodium and carbon, preferably graphite, having the formula NaC64. The complex may be formed in situ and may be mixed with alkali metal supported on carbon, free alkali metal or free carbon. Reaction is effected at 50-4,000 p.s.i.g. and 100-140 DEG C. in the presence or absence of a hydrocarbon solvent for times of 1 minute to 12 hours. Water, oxygen, allene or methylacetylene should be absent but inert gases such as nitrogen, methane, ethane or propane may be present. The catalyst may be fixed, fluidised or used as a slurry.
