<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical member preventing both generation of moire patterns and generation of uneven brightness that are caused by minute projections and recesses disposed for prevention of optical adhesion on a back face of the optical member opposite to a face where unit optical elements are formed, and to provide a surface light source device and an image display device using the optical member. <P>SOLUTION: An optical member 10 includes a sheet type main body 1, a large number of unit optical elements 2 arranged on one surface 1p of the main body, and minute projections 3 formed on the other surface 1q. The minute projections comprise a mesh pattern 3P that segments a large number of opening regions A and protrudes with respect to the opening regions. In the mesh pattern, the average number N of boundary lines L extending from one branch point B satisfies 3.0≤N<4.0, and no direction exists where the opening regions have repeated cycles. The surface light source device includes the optical member mounted on a light-exiting face of a light source.
