A process of refining metal comprises charging an electric furnace with a solid metal charge, melting down the charge by heat supplied from burners, and finishing the refining by electric heating. The burners, which may enter the furnace through holes in the roof or through the holes provided for the electrodes, may be supplied with gas or oil and oxygen or air greatly enriched with oxygen, and the fuel may contain sulphur which is removed from the metal during refining. The electric furnace may be so designed that it is unable to supply sufficient energy to melt the charge.
|
