Apparatus for pelletizing hay comprises an anvil mechanism 43 and a rotor 29 which compresses the hay, supplied through a feed conduit 32 from a pick-up device 21, to form pellets P the anvil mechanism 43 being retractable, Fig. 3. When the force of compression exerted by the rotor is great enough to overcome the force of a resilient member 70 urging the member 56 of the anvil mechanism 43 upwards. The anvil member 56 and an L-shaped member 50 are both pivoted on a cross member 44, Fig. 8, the member 56 having yoke members 57 at the upper end of which are half trunnions 59 engaging in milled out parts of the cross H member 44 when the anvil is in its raised position. As the member 56 is forced down by the pressure from the rotor 29, the trunnions 59 disengage and trigger elements, Fig. 12 (not shown), at the lower end of the member 50 release a latch 60 thereby allowing the members 50 and 56 to pivot outwards. The rotor 29 has a shear blade 42 co-operating with a fixed blade 46. The hay is compressed within grooves, Fig. 7 (not shown), in the rotor which are angularly offset from one another. The grooves may be of various shapes in cross-section, Figs. 22-25 (not shown): The anvil may form part of a toggle mechanism collapsible under a predetermined pressure, Figs. 26-27 (not shown). The pellets may pass through a transfer case before they are discharged.
