The invention relates to a method for electronic recognition of traffic signs, wherein basic patterns which are typical of a traffic sign are recognised from the image data from a camera (2) disposed in a vehicle (10). According to the invention the data of the recognised basic pattern are transferred wirelessly to an external server unit (9) by means of a communication device (7) of the vehicle (10) for transmitting and receiving data, a pattern recognition is carried out by means of a pattern recognition algorithm from the external server unit (9), and as a result of the pattern recognition the data of the recognised traffic sign are transferred to the communication unit (7) of the vehicle (10) and a corresponding traffic sign is shown in particular on a display unit (5).
