A speed control system operable to control a motor vehicle to operate in accordance with a set-speed value. The system is operable to allow a user to reduce the set-speed value by actuation of a vehicle brake control member (163, fig 1) and/or increase the set-speed value by actuation of a vehicle accelerator control member 161. The brake/accelerator control members 161, (163) have actuation values that are within a prescribed range of actuation values from a first non-zero actuation value to a second actuation value that is greater than the first. The system comprises a plurality of speed control systems, such as a low speed progress control 12 which operates in dependence on a type of terrain, e.g. grass, gravel, snow, ice etc, and receives inputs from a gearbox 124, a braking system 22 and the accelerator pedal 161. Human machine interfaces (HMI) 18, 20, 20HD are provided so that a user may input the target vehicle speed. Also claimed is a method of controlling a vehicle. |
