A controller for a motor vehicle comprising: means for receiving information indicative of a current vehicle speed (S107); means for receiving information indicative of an amount of brake force a braking system of the vehicle is developing or is capable of developing (S105); means for receiving information indicative of a gradient of a driving surface on which the vehicle is driving (S103); and torque transmission reduction means for causing a powertrain torque reduction operation to be performed in which the torque transmission from a torque delivery device to the driven wheels is reduced or substantially terminated (S109). The controller is configured to automatically cause the torque reduction operation to be performed in dependence on the received information regarding the vehicle speed, the braking force and the driving surface gradient. The controller may determine if the braking force is sufficient to hold the vehicle stationary on the given driving surface. The controller may further determine if a positive tractive force indicative of a downhill slope is present at the wheels. |
