1. A method of specifying, from among a plurality of physical resource block (PRB) pairs in a subframe, one or more sets of one or more PRB pairs that a user equipment (UE) is to monitor for an enhanced physical downlink control channel (EPDCCH), the method comprising:
sending, from a base station, a first representation of the plurality of PRB pairs, the representation including a plurality of bits, a total number of the plurality of bits being less than a product of a total number of the plurality of PRB pairs and a total number of the one or more sets, the first representation indicating which of the plurality of PRB pairs are in at least one of the one or more sets of one or more PRB pairs the UE is to monitor for the EPDCCH, the first representation including one or more entries corresponding to each of the plurality of PRB pairs except one or more excluded PRB pairs from among the plurality of PRB pairs, the first representation including no entries corresponding to the one or more excluded PRB pairs, the one or more excluded PRB pairs being PRB pairs of the subframe which are defined as not being available for providing the EPDCCH.
