a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) substrate comprising greater than 85 weight percent PcBN; and a polished coating adhered to the substrate comprising first and second layers of Al2O3 deposited by chemical vapor deposition, wherein the first Al2O3 layer of the coating is deposited directly on the PcBN substrate and the second Al2O3 layer is deposited on TiN, TiC or TiCN layer and wherein the coating has a surface roughness (Ra) less than about 600 nm in an area of the cutting tool for contacting a workpiece. |
