According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer. The second substrate includes a third electrode and a second vertical alignment film. The electrode formation surface is positioned closer to the second substrate than a portion of the first vertical alignment film, which opposes the first electrode. |

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
a first substrate comprising a first electrode, a stage including an electrode formation surface, a switching element, a second electrode provided on the electrode formation surface and electrically connected to the switching element, and a first vertical alignment film covering the first electrode and the second electrode; a second substrate which comprises a third electrode opposing the first electrode and the second electrode, and a second vertical alignment film covering the third electrode, and is arranged opposite to the first substrate with a gap therebetween; and a liquid crystal layer held between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the electrode formation surface is positioned closer to the second substrate than a portion of the first vertical alignment film, which opposes the first electrode, wherein a height of the stage is set such that the second electrode is positioned in a center of the liquid crystal layer in a thickness direction. |
