Acrylic acid n-butyl ester is separated from a mixture with n-butanol, which may also contain di-n-butyl ether and/or acetic acid n-butyl ester, by extractive distillation wherein said mixture is admixed with nitrobenzene or benzonitrile as a distillation auxiliary, n-butanol and optionally di-n-butyl ether and/or acetic acid n-butyl ester are removed by distillation and the resulting residue, which consists of the distillation auxiliary and acrylic acid n-butyl ester, is separated by fractional distillation. The distillation may be performed under reduced pressure, the mixture may be washed in counter-current manner with the auxiliary liquid and a polymerization inhibitor may be added prior to distillation. |
