PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fibric softener active composition having a tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-methylammonium methylsulfate fatty acid ester which has a low methanol content.SOLUTION: There is produced a fibric softener active composition having a tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-methylammonium methylsulfate fatty acid ester and a low methanol content by quaternization of a triethanolamine fatty acid ester using dimethyl sulfate in the presence of a solid acid scavenger.
