A method for performing user authentication of a portable electronic device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: determining if a peripheral electronic device is within a particular distance from the portable electronic device; receiving biometrics from the peripheral electronic device when the peripheral electronic device is determined to be within a particular distance from the portable electronic device; confirming if the biometrics received from the peripheral electronic device coincide with biometrics stored in the portable electronic device; and canceling security set for the portable electronic device when the biometrics received from the peripheral electronic device is confirmed to coincide with biometrics stored in the portable electronic device.
