In a method for operating an internal combustion engine (1) having at least one cylinder (2) and a reciprocating piston (15) inside the cylinder (2), the reciprocating piston reciprocates between a top dead center (TDC) and a bottom dead center (BDC) by being connected to a crankshaft and rotating with the total load at the speed of 1200 rpm or lower. The cylinder (2) has air-passing openings (10, 12) for inhaled air and exhaust gas and the openings are closed during a main portion of the compression stroke of the piston (15) moving toward the TDC. When the piston is in the interval of a crank angle from 50 degrees after the TDC and 50 degrees before the TDC, at least one liquid non-auto-igniting fuel injector (26) is placed on a cylinder liner (2′) where the ignition fuel injector (26) is covered by the piston (15). The liquid non-auto-igniting fuel injector (26) injects liquid non-auto-igniting fuel into the cylinder (2) during a compression stroke, thereby lowering pressure inside the cylinder and reducing a compression operation conducted by the piston to increase the efficiency of the engine.
