The present invention relates to a power supply apparatus and a controlling method thereof. The power supply apparatus according to the present invention comprises: a DC/AC converter; a transformer; an AC/DC converter; and a loss compensation unit which is installed in front of the inductor on a secondary side output terminal of the transformer so as to compensate the power loss due to the effect of the inductor at a light load, in which the loss compensation unit is configured in a series connection circuit of a capacitor and a semiconductor switch element, and according to a control command from outside controller, the semiconductor switch element turns off at one or more light load, and turn on at light load.
